INFORMATION ON UKCC  Courses

Easterton Equine Activities Club based at Easterton Farm, 3 miles from Auchterarder, offers UKCC Generic Level 1 and 2 coaching courses as well as UKCC Level 1 & 2 Vaulting courses.

They have three qualified UKCC Coach Educators on site, Pat Taylor BHSII SM BSc(Hons) Equine Science, Ann Hunt MBE, MRCVS, BVMS, Level 3 Vaulting Coach and Kathryn Jeffress (Hunt) also a Level 3 Vaulting Coach and UKCC Level 2 Riding Coach

The premises have been approved as a Training and Assessment site by Horsescotland and have successfully run several course over the past 3 years.

There are six horses, working at Elementary or above, for ridden work, lunge work or vaulting.

The Level 1 Coach will be qualified to assist a more experienced Coach. The course programme covers Safety, Risk assessment, Emergency procedures, Code of conduct for coaches and techniques on ‘How to coach’ rather than ‘What to coach’. How to draw up session plans, how to deliver a task and how to evaluate the results and your own personal development are all addressed. The courses are a mixture of interactive classroom work and practical coaching work.

There is a technical content that covers teaching basic principles of tacking up, mounting/dismounting, use of natural and artificial aids, classical position and some simple flatwork exercises. Candidates can choose between coaching the jumping position and working over poles, or lunge work. Some basic equine knowledge is required which will be evidenced by Q & A .

Assessment will be competency based and will be a mixture of portfolio evidence (sample accident forms, risk assessment forms, session plans etc.) and a practical assessment day where you will be asked to deliver a 15 minute session one of the topics in the technical content.

This is the first step on the ladder towards a rich and rewarding coaching career. The course will help you develop your own portfolio which you will build on throughout your coaching pathway. Funding is available through Horsescotland

The Level 2 Coach will be qualified to work independently and is quite a step up from the Level 1. There are 4 training days with an internal assessment on the 4th day, followed by an external assessment. The level of technical competency should be equivalent to at least a BHSAI. Horsescotland has procured an excellent Insurance package for freelance coaches in Scotland holding the UKCC Level 2 certificate.
